The band leader of Sesto band
It is not so very long ago that brass band music in Sesto was only for men. It was unthinkable that one day women would take their place in the ranks of musicians. The attitude was that if they were going to be involved in music, then it had better be in the church choir! But times have changed: today a young “spirited” woman is leading Sesto’s band. And of course she is far from just any woman. Stefanie Watschinger was born to wield the baton. It was the legacy of her father, Alfred, who in 2014 passed on his conductor’s baton and pedestal to her, which he in turn had taken over from his own father. Musical talent is truly hereditary and even increases in some cases from one generation to the next. This theory is corroborated if we consider Stefanie Watschinger’s background: Born in 1990, at eight years old she took her first clarinet lesson, attended a secondary school specialising in music, then studied at the Mozarteum Salzburg in Innsbruck. But there is more than a predisposition towards music involved here. Hard work, endurance and great passion also play their part. And because Stefanie Watschinger never has enough of music, for her main job she also passes on her store of musical knowledge to young up-and-coming talents.
