“Living where others go on vacation”: a slogan that was promising for a long time has now almost become a curse. Because it lives – and above all – it lives no longer so well in South Tyrol, as also results of current studies show. High real estate prices, rising rents and hardly any more opportunities to realize the dream of owning their own home present South Tyroleans with major challenges. In the public debate surrounding the housing shortage, the role of tourism is also critically discussed.
How exactly do tourism and the density of tourism businesses affect the housing situation in South Tyrol, which already has a scarce permanent settlement area? To what extent are rising living costs, tourism success and labor shortages related? Can tourism also be of importance in overcoming existing problems? These questions are the focus of the Sesto Fireside Chats 2023. Together with experts from the fields of economics, social affairs, politics and science, answers will be sought and possible solutions discussed.
